Journal Bar connects to the Internet via
various methods, including using wireless networks which may
incur a cost. The user is responsible for paying for all costs
associated with Journal Bar's access to the Internet. To
disable wireless network access from within Journal Bar, go to
the Links section and tap the green "tick" icon.
Installation
If you are reinstalling Journal Bar, any old version of Journal Bar
must be uninstalled before continuing. To uninstall Journal Bar, see the
Uninstall section.
How it works
Journal Bar gets weather, stocks & news from the Internet through a wireless
connection. You specify in the Options screen how often
you wish Journal Bar to get this data, and the data will be automatically
received. Once it has been downloaded, you can view it at your leisure. The only
exception to this rule is the news data. The headlines are downloaded
automatically, but to save space on the BlackBerry, the news stories are only
downloaded when you request to read them.
Getting Started
Once Journal Bar has been installed on your BlackBerry, the Journal Bar program
icon will appear in the list of programs. Select Journal Bar and it will run
through the setup of the product.
During this time, Journal Bar will get a good connection to the Internet,
will get the home city (so it can work out the home weather city, get sample
stock symbols and news listings for this country). It also determines how often
Journal Bar should update itself with new data. Finally, if you have a
registration code, this can be entered at this point.
Using Journal
Bar
Once the startup wizard has been run, the main Journal Bar screen is displayed.
This shows 4 tabs at the top of the screen: Weather, Stocks, News and Options.
To select a tab, use the scroll wheel to move to the tab, then depress the
scroll wheel to select this tab. Scrolling past the Options tab will move the
highlighter down to the Weather, Stocks or News area where more detailed weather
can be selected, stock details or news stories.
When Journal Bar is synchronizing data, small yellow bars under the tab will
appear to show what information is being updated, and how close it is to being
complete. To change how often the Journal Bar data is updated, see the
Options section.
Weather
Journal Bar can get weather information for up to five cities anywhere in
the world. It also receives satellite information and for some cities it also
receives radar information.
When weather information has been downloaded for a city, it will be displayed
on the Journal Bar home screen, under the Weather tab. Scroll down to select
"Details" to see more information for this cities weather. If more than one
weather city are selected, these can be viewed by scrolling down to them.
In the weather details page, use the scroll button to move between tabs, and
to scroll to see more information on a tab. On the Radar and Infrared tabs the
image will show if it's been scheduled for download, and there exists an image
for this city. Press the trackwheel on the Radar or Infrared tabs to get an
updated image, automatically get images, or to view the image in full size.
See the Options section for more information on how to
change the weather cities.
Stock
The stocks tab shows stock information for up to fourteen stocks or exchange
rates. By default several stocks and exchange rates are selected. To view all
the stocks, use the trackwheel to scroll down. Depressing the trackwheel will
display details for the stock or exchange rate.
On the stock details page, scroll down using the trackwheel to see all the
details for this stock.
On the exchange rate details page, scroll down to convert from one currency
to another. All currencies can be converted from/to. Highlight one of the rates
to change it (e.g. highlight "Euro" to change it to another countries currency).
To enter an amount, navigate to the number amount next to the currency and enter
the amount. To get the converted value in the other currency, scroll down to the
currency not being edited.
