Which Pocket PCs is Journal Bar
compatible with?
Journal Bar is compatible with all Pocket PCs with two
notable exceptions:
- Not compatible with original Pocket PC 2000
devices.
- Not compatible with iPAQ hw6500, 6515 and
hw6700 devices (and any other with 240x240 screens).
What do all these version numbers
mean?
To see the current version of Journal Bar, select select Start|Settings|Today.
Select the Items tab, select Journal Bar, then tap the Options
button. On the General tab the version number is displayed in
the format: v1.2.3-4 where:
1 - The major version number. This is changed when there
are major revisions to the product.
2 - The minor version number. This is changed when there are
small revisions to the product.
3 - The point release number. This is changed when there are
bug fixes or small tweaks to the product.
4 - This is a little special. This refers to the content version
number. Journal Bar relies on getting web content from web
pages. If a web site design is changed, this can affect how
weather, news, stock & link data is retrieved. Therefore,
Journal Bar constantly checks for new updates (if the Check
for updates box is checked). If a new content version number
is found, new content information is downloaded and this version
number is increased. Note, to manually update the content
information, tap the Update Format button at the bottom of
the General screen.
The version content will be automatically updated, so the
version content number may increase without any warning -
it's just keeping the product automatically updated so it
can get the latest information as it should. However, if there
is a new version of the Journal Bar product, the major, minor
or point release number will change. This will in turn display
an extra page of information on Journal Bar informing users
that another version is available.
How does Journal Bar work?
Journal Bar gets weather, news, stock etc... data
from the Internet via your desktop PC (when it is connected
to the Internet). It gets this information when your Pocket
PC is connected to the PC via the docking cradle or connection.
Wireless links that connect to the Internet are also supported.
When your Pocket PC is docked it will start looking for new
data. The top left icon on the Journal Bar will flash to show
it is looking for new data. When it has finished getting data
the icon will stop flashing. Weather, news etc... data will
be updated automatically every three hours. Stock information
will automatically be updated every 10 minutes.
How can I access Journal Bar's options?
Select Start, Settings, Today. Select the Items tab, select
Journal Bar, then tap the Options button.
Journal Bar doesn't get any data.
What's happening?
First of all, check that your PC is connected to the Internet
and can successfully browse web pages. Then check the Pocket
PC has a partnership with the PC (the system tray ActiveSync
icon on your PC should be yellow or green).
It may also take a little time to get data from the Internet
into Journal Bar, especially with a dial-up connection. The
link section in particular may take several minutes to appear.
However, weather and/or news headlines should appear after
the first couple of minutes of being connected.
Sometimes the data source may be down for some reason, or
may not be updating. Click here to view sites that are known
to be down at the moment.
If you still aren't seeing any data, it may be that the Pocket
PC settings to read the web pages is not set up correctly.
To test your connection is working correctly, select Start,
Internet Explorer, tap the House
(Home) icon at the bottom of the screen, select the Pocket
PC.com item on the home page, then tap the Go
to PocketPC.com now! link. If you get a message saying
the connection settings aren't correct, then your Internet
connection isn't correct yet. Tap the Not online yet?
Find out how to get connected. link below it to correct
the problem.
A common problem is with using the Connection Manager to
get the Internet data. To turn this off, go to Start,
Settings, Today, select the Items tab,
select Journal Bar, then hit the Options button.
Uncheck the Use Connection Manager check box, then tap
OK.
Some Internet connections require a proxy server to connect
to the Internet, and some do not. For example, a work link
may require a proxy server, but the home link does not. If
you aren't seeing any information you may need to enter the
proxy server address into the Pocket PC settings. To do this,
go to the Start,
Settings, Connections screen.
Also, see the Pocket PC help for more information on adjusting
connections.
On some systems, just setting the system up to use a proxy
server isn't enough. You may need a 3rd party product to get
access to the Internet through the Pocket PC. One product that
customers have found useful is
ProxyPlus.
Configuration is done through web browser. Click Proxy
Settings then
- Cascading | Non-ICP Cascading: Configure
your company's browser (enter authentication info if
required)
- Cascading | General: set Object
Retrieval Method to via Non-ICP Parent
- Proxies | General: enable proxy types and
ports you want to use (the default selections should be
fine)
- Administrator | Restart (applies changes)
- Set My Pocket PC Connection to use my local proxy
You should also go to ActiveSync on the desktop pc, select
Tools, Options and make sure on the Rules
tab that the Pass Through is selected as The
Internet.
If you are using the Power Clean feature
in Battery Pack Pro to clean up unwanted
files, the Temporary Internet Files box should
be unchecked, or this will delete Journal Bar stored web pages.
Journal Bar will not get data when docked if
the Google Web Accelerator is installed on the desktop.
This stops the connection between the device and the Internet.
Journal Bar has got some data, but
some is missing.
It may also take a little time to get data from the Internet
into Journal Bar, particularly with a dial-up connection.
Particularly, the link & stock data may take several minutes
to appear. However, weather and/or news headlines should appear
after the first couple of minutes of being connected.
Also, there may be a problem with the web site that is getting
the data. In particular, some web sites have occasional down-time
to update their web pages. Wait an hour or two and the data
should be updated correctly. If the problem persists, unselecting
that piece of data in the Journal Bar Options section will
stop it trying to get this data.
Finally, please check there is enough memory to store the
Journal Bar data. As a rough guide the Pocket PC's memory
should have at least 700 KB free, however, more or less may
be required depending upon the amount of data selected and
the web sites that are stored.
Will Journal Bar work with my Pocket
PC Phone edition?
Yes! Journal Bar will download information through your PC
ActiveSync connection, and you can use your cell connection
to get data when on the move. To get Journal Bar to grab data
when you're not at your desk, tap the top left Section Icon
on the Journal Bar screen, and it will start to get data.
Will Journal Bar work with a wireless
connection?
Journal Bar will work with a BlueTooth ActiveSync connection
as if it were a standard serial or USB ActiveSync connection.
Journal Bar will also work with a 802.11 wireless Active Sync
connection, however it will not automatically grab data. To
get Journal Bar to grab data, tap the top left Section Icon
on the Journal Bar screen for a few seconds, and it will start to get data.
How do I find stock ticker symbols?
Click here for common ticker symbols.
For non-US stock symbols, look them up at
http://moneycentral.msn.com.
Which countries are supported for
weather data?
All countries (with the exception of Bhutan) have weather
information.
Why can't I see radar & infrared
images?
Currently only US & Canadian cities can display radar images
for the weather. Also, these images will only be stored if
"Use Fast Cache Store" is checked in the Journal Bar Options
Page (you will need to press the "Web Page Store" button to
access this screen). Finally, very occasionally the images
from the web source may not be available. They should reappear
the in 24 hours.
How can I zoom my radar
& infrared images?
To see the radar & infrared images in more
detail, tap on the image in the detailed weather screen. This
will bring up the image in Internet Explorer. To view the
image in more detail:
Windows Mobile 2003 and older devices
Select the View menu and uncheck Fit to screen.
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and
newer devices
Select the View menu then Layout. Select
Desktop.
Where have movie reviews gone?
If the movie reviews icon appears as a Internet Explorer icon,
go into the Journal Bar options, go to the Links tab and reselect
*Movie Reviews* once more. Tap OK and sync, and the latest
movie reviews will appear.
How do I store the web pages on
a storage card?
Go into the Journal Bar options. On the General tab there
is a Cached Pages box. Use the soft keyboard to enter a new
location (e.g. \Storage Card\TIF\). Tap OK to change the location,
then soft reset your Pocket PC.
Note, this may have unknown effects on your browser - particularly
if you redirect the location to a storage card and then eject
the card. In particular, changing the location to a RAM disk
on your Pocket PC like the iPAQ File Store does not work and
results in a small system file that cannot be removed appearing
on the RAM disk. Changing the storage location is done at
your own risk.
Why won't my backup software work
with Journal Bar?
Journal Bar stores the web pages it reads into memory. This
data is used all the time, and therefore backup software cannot
backup this data as it's currently being used. It is recommended
that users uninstall Journal Bar if they want to make a backup
of their system.
Journal Bar won't uninstall.
On certain Pocket PC Phone Edition devices, the phone may need to be turned off to get Journal Bar to uninstall correctly.
My news headlines don't display properly.
Russian headlines use the Cyrillic font, and so won't display
correctly. The news stories should work however. In Internet Explorer, go to
Tools|Options, the Advanced tab, and change the default character set to the correct character set for this data.
When I disconnect, Journal Bar keeps
trying to get data.
If you connect Journal Bar wirelessly and then disconnect
before it's finished syncing, Journal Bar may keep trying to
connect. To correct this problem, go into the Journal Bar
options screen and uncheck the Use Connection Manager
check box. Tap OK to accept the changes, then soft
reset the device.
Can I skin the weather icons?
Yes, in Journal Bar v2.0.4 and later. See
this link for detailed instructions
of how you can skin the weather icons.
What programs are incompatible with
Journal Bar?
The following programs are incompatible with Journal Bar:
- Pocket Arabizer from IMAGiNET.
How do I add custom RSS news feeds?
Custom RSS feeds can only be added with the Journal Bar
Expansion Pack installed and detected. See Why
isn't the Expansion Pack being detected? if the Expansion
Pack isn't shown as detected in the Journal Bar options page
(the "General" tab).
Create a text file on your PC and rename it as a ".jb_rss"
file (e.g. "news.jb_rss"). Each RSS news feed will have three
parameters associated with it:
<title>Washington Post Top News</title>
<icid>5</icid>
<url>http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/topnews/rssheadlines.xml</url>
The <title> tags specify the readable name for this RSS
news feed.
The <icid> tags specify the small icon (which appears in the
top left hand corner of the Journal Bar page). Examples to set
this to: 5 is the US flag. 8 is a globe icon, 10 is a home
icon.
The <url> tag will contain the URL the RSS news feed is
located at.
Up to 100 RSS news feeds can be added to the same .jb_rss
file.
For a sample file containing some sample RSS feeds,
download it here.
The file should be copied to your Pocket PC's \windows
folder. Once this has been done, dock the Pocket PC then go
into the Journal Bar Options screen and tap the "Update
Format" button. Tap OK to cancel the Options page and go back
to the today screen. Wait for Journal Bar to update the first
weather section, then go back into the Journal Bar Options
page and the new RSS news feeds should appear as available
news feeds on the "News" tab.
Can I use a different
web browser with Journal Bar?
To use a different browser with Journal Bar, a new
registry value should be added using a registry editing
program. Kilmist make an
excellent registry editor:
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\OmegaOne\JournalBar
Name: "Browser"
Value: <the full path and file name of the browser - e.g.
"\windows\Thunderhawk.exe">
Once this registry value has been added, soft reset the
Pocket PC and Journal Bar will start to use this browser.
Why isn't the Expansion Pack being
detected?
For best results, install the Expansion Pack first, then
Journal Bar. However, if you install Journal Bar, then the
Expansion Pack, it should still detect. If you are having
problems with the Expansion Pack showing the extra features,
do the following:
- Soft reset your Pocket PC
- Dock the device with your PC connected to the Internet
- Wait for a full sync cycle to occur
- Tap Start|Settings|Today|Items tab, select "Journal
Bar", then tap Options.
- Check "Expansion Pack Detected" text appears on the
main options screen.
The Expansion Pack will now have been detected.
If you are still having problems with the
Expansion Pack being detected, copy the jbep.dll file from the
\Program Files\OmegaOne\JournalBar folder to the \Windows
folder on the Pocket PC. You must ensure that you are viewing
all files otherwise this file will be hidden (tap & hold in a
blank space on the screen and select "view all files").
