Installation
Problems with reinstallation
If you are having trouble reinstalling a newer version of
Journal Bar, or are upgrading from the trial version to the
full version you may have trouble with the Journal.dll file
being already in use. To correct this:
Uninstall the current version of Journal Bar. See the
Uninstallation
instructions for more information.
Install the new version only when uninstallation is complete.
How it works
The Journal Bar gets weather, news, stocks etc. information
from the Internet through your PC or a wireless connection.
Essentially, if you can view web pages on your Pocket PC, then
the Journal Bar can get data. To test if your Pocket PC can
get web pages, select Start, Internet Explorer, select the Pocket
PC.com link, then the Go to Pocket PC.com now! link. If you
get a warning message box then you are not connected. See your
Pocket PC guide on how to connect your Pocket PC to the Internet.
Once the Journal Bar has the information from the Internet
it stores the information on your Pocket PC, so when you're
on the go you can view all this data. Once you connect your
device to the Internet again (e.g. by connecting it to your
PC through it's cradle when the PC is connected to the Internet)
it will gather updated data.
Using Journal
Bar When Journal Bar is installed, it will ask you
to enter a country, a city or a ZIP / postal code. This is
used to get local content such as Weather, news and movie
times. If the location entered isn't recognized, or you wish
to change your location, see Journal Bar Settings on how to
change it. Sometimes you may need to enter a place near to
where you live to get the optimum information. Please experiment
with whatever works best for you.
Once the location has been entered, Journal Bar will configure your Internet connection, then it will appear on the today screen.
Sections
Journal Bar divides all the information it displays into sections,
or pages of information. For more information, see
Journal
Bar Sections.
Journal Bar Controls
On the left hand side of the Journal Bar are three icons /
buttons:
- The top icon (the Section Icon) displays an icon showing
which section of information is being displayed (e.g. Weather,
Sports News, Stocks).
- The up and down buttons allow manual scrolling between each
section.
When the Journal Bar is getting new data the Section Icon
will flash. Once it has received data for the section current
being viewed it will stop flashing. To reduce the time it
takes to get data, sections can be turned off (particularly
the Sports Scores and Movie Reviews custom links). Sometimes
the Section Icon will continue to flash if it cannot get data.
See the Troubleshooting section for more information on helping
Journal Bar get data.
When new data is being received, a meter showing download progress will appear on the right hand side. When all the data has been collected, it will disappear.
To force Journal Bar to get new data, tap the Section Icon
and hold it down for a few seconds. It will begin to flash,
showing it is preparing to receive data. If you are not connected
to the Internet, it will not attempt to get data and will
stop flashing. This is particularly useful for 802.11 or cell
connections, as Journal Bar can be updated when and where
you wish.
On the Custom Links section three more icons appear on the
right hand side:
- The top right icon links to the Today settings. This link can be
used to change the Journal Bar settings.
- The bottom right icon links to this help
document.
- The top left icon turns wireless data gathering on and
off. When the green tick is displayed, Journal Bar will
gather data from ActiveSync, WiFi and GPRS sources, if
available. If the red cross is displayed, Journal Bar will
only gather data from ActiveSync when docked.
- The bottom right icon changes the proxy
settings. If your network connection needs a proxy at work,
but not at home, use this setting to change between using a
proxy or not.
Journal Bar
Sections
The following sections are displayed on the
Journal Bar.Weather
When Journal Bar first starts up only one weather city is
displayed. The 13 other weather cities can be used to monitor other weather
locations. To add other weather locations, see Journal Bar Settings.
The weather screens will display 5 day weather information
from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (for
the USA), Environment Canada (for Canada), the World Meteorological Organization (for the
rest of the world) plus other weather sources. To get more detailed weather information,
tap on any of the weather icons. Note, weather details are
only displayed for the USA. The Now tab will show the current

Journal Bar
Settings To adjust the settings of the Journal
Bar:
- Select Start, Settings, Today. You may need to select the
Items
tab.
- Select Journal Bar. Tap the Options button on the right hand
side.
This will bring up a screen allowing you to alter how Journal
Bar displays information. The following settings can be altered:
General
At the top the version number will be displayed. (e.g. v3.0.0
- 1). The first three numbers denote the version you downloaded
(e.g. v3.0.0). The last number denotes the latest format data
that is available. If the Check for updates is selected, this
format information will automatically be downloaded and will
update the system to make sure Journal Bar stays current with
changes to how News, Stocks & Links information is processed.
Check the Sync when first docked check box if you wish to
synchronize the Journal Bar data when you put your Pocket
PC in it's docking cradle.
The Check for updates feature will not only get format information
as described above, but will also check for any new versions
of the software. If a new version is available, it will display
a new "section" between Links and Weather telling
you a new update is available. See
Omega One's FAQ for more
information on how to get the new update.
All the web pages displayed are stored in the main memory on the Pocket PC.
By altering the settings under the Web Page Store
button the web pages can be stored in a different location (for example, on a storage card).
This can be useful if you need more main memory, and have a
large storage card to store the Journal Bar web content.
On this page it is also possible to choose
to use the Fast Cache Store. Using the Fast Cache Store
speeds up the loading of web pages and uses up less memory to
store web pages. However, links from the stored web pages will
not work when tapped on (presuming there is an active Internet
connection). Unchecking this check box will allow links to
work from stored web pages.
To make the sections scroll automatically, check the
Auto
Scroll check box. How quickly it scrolls each section can
be adjusted between 5 & 180 seconds.
As mentioned above, the format data will be automatically
downloaded when it becomes available. However, if there is
a problem with getting this information, tapping the Update
Format button will manually update this information.
Web pages data are stored on the Pocket PC. If you wish to
occasionally clean out this store to free up memory, tap the
Delete Content button. Note, this will delete all news, stock
& link web pages. To make them reappear, dock your Pocket
PC and let the information resynchronise.
Weather
Tap the Edit button to change the weather location. The location you enter here will also get
movie listings information for Australia, Canada, France, the UK and the USA. In the USA this can also
be used to get local news information.
Use the check boxes to display or not display the relevant weather location.
Use the radio buttons to select whether the weather temperatures
should be displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit.
At the bottom of the screen, the weather information update
rate can be changed from between 1 hour and 6 hours.

brackets after the ticker symbol - e.g. $DJI(Dow),COMP,MSFT,INTC(Intel).
To display no stock information, uncheck the Display check
box.
Stocks gains are showed in green, and losses in red. On some
today backgrounds this may be difficult to read. To display
gains and losses in the usual today text color, uncheck the
Gain/Loss in color check box.
To find the correct ticker symbol, see
moneycentral.msn.com.

box.
At the bottom of the screen, the link information update
rate can be changed from between 1 hour and 6 hours.
Troubleshooting
How can I access Journal Bar's options?
Select Start, Settings, Today. Select the
Items tab, select
Journal Bar, then tap the Options button.
Journal Bar doesn't get any data. What's happening?
First of all, check that your PC is connected to the Internet
and can successfully browse web pages. Then check the Pocket
PC has a partnership with the PC (the system tray ActiveSync
icon on your PC should be yellow or green).
It may also take a little time to get data from the Internet
into Journal Bar, especially with a dial-up connection. The
link section in particular may take several minutes to appear.
However, weather and/or news headlines should appear after
the first couple of minutes of being connected.
Original Pocket PC devices are not able to connect to the
Internet through the PC, and therefore are not supported.
If
you still aren't seeing any data, it may be that the Pocket
PC settings to read the web pages is not set up correctly.
To test your connection is working correctly, select Start,
Internet Explorer, tap the House
(Home) icon at the bottom of the screen, select the Pocket
PC.com item on the home page, then tap the Go
to PocketPC.com now! link. If you get a message saying
the connection settings aren't correct, then your Internet
connection isn't correct yet. Tap the Not online yet?
Find out how to get connected. link below it to correct
the problem.
Some Internet connections require a proxy server to connect to the Internet, and some do not.
For example, a work link may require a proxy server, but the
home link does not. If you aren't seeing any information it may be the proxy needs to be set up.
To do this, move to the Links section and tap on the
Connection icon (the icon with an arrow on it on the right
hand side). Ask your system administrator for the proxy server address, then enter the proxy details in the Start, Settings, Connections screen. See the Pocket PC help for more information on adjusting connections.
Journal Bar has got some data, but some is missing.
It may also take a little time to get data from the Internet
into Journal Bar, particularly with a dial-up connection.
Particularly, the link & stock data may take several minutes
to appear. However, weather and/or news headlines should appear
after the first couple of minutes of being connected.
Also, there may be a problem with the web site that is getting
the data. In particular, some web sites have occasional down-time
to update their web pages. Wait an hour or two and the data
should be updated correctly. If the problem persists, unselecting
that piece of data in the Journal Bar Options section will
stop it trying to get this data.
In general, if the section icon is flashing, it is still
updating that section. Once it stops flashing, this section
is updated.
Will Journal Bar work with my Pocket PC Phone edition?
Yes! Journal Bar will download information through your PC
ActiveSync connection, and you can use your cell connection
to get data when on the move (when coverage allows an Internet
connection). To get Journal Bar to grab data when you're not
at your desk, tap the top left Section Icon on the Journal
Bar screen, and it will start to get data.
Will Journal Bar work with a wireless connection?
Journal Bar will work with a BlueTooth ActiveSync connection
as if it were a standard serial or USB ActiveSync connection.
Journal Bar will also work with a 802.11 wireless Active Sync
connection, however it will not automatically grab data. To
get Journal Bar to grab data, tap the top left Section Icon
on the Journal Bar screen for a few seconds, and it will start to get data.
Purchasing
If you like Journal Bar or the
Journal Bar Expansion Pack you can purchase them at
the Omega One web site. Uninstalling
To uninstall:
Select Start, Settings, Remove Programs (on the Systems
tab).
Select Omega One Journal Bar and tap Remove.
